Races and gladiator shows were more popular than the plays. There were four kinds of dramatic performances, Comedies, Tragedies, and the two most popular, Farces and Pantomines. They also believed that their gods liked gladiatorial fights, so that going to the fights was a sort of religious experience as well as being fun. Many Roman people went to big amphitheaters (like our football stadiums today) to see professionals fight (like boxers today). There were the gladiators, the feeding of people to lions, animals fighting animals, animal hunts, animal circus acts, and mock sea battles, where the Colosseum was flooded with water. The animals used in these events were kept below the Colosseum and an estimated 5,000 animals were killed the day the Colosseum opened.

The gladiators were armed with daggers, swords, forks and nets. They fought with slaves and criminals who are often not armed, or armed only with the net. They fought to the death. Were gladiators really forced to fight to the death? David Potter, a professor of Classical Studies with a keen interest in sports, both ancient and modern, re examines the facts about these popular athletes. Gladiators were mainly slaves or prisoners and they had no choice - they had to go and fight. In the amphitheatre, gladiators would fight with animals and other gladiators.

Roman actors, who performed in the open-air arenas or amphitheatres, were complete entertainers who wore sabilla or metal chips to their stage footwear to come up with the first tap shoes in history. This made their dance movements audible to the crowds. Schwartz, who will report to SPE Co-President and COO Bob Wynne, will oversee a wide slate of original live-action and animated theatrical releases, television programs and direct-to-video products, all created especially for children and families. Schwartz commented, “From the inception of our animation and children’s programming unit a few short years ago, the mandate to produce the highest quality programming has always been present.
